A New Beginning
January 23, 2012
The beginning of each new year is traditionally a time for new beginnings. A time when folks generally make life changing resolutions they eventually cannot keep because they lose steam, lose interest, lose time, etc. It makes me wonder why people continue to do this to themselves year after year.
This year I am feeling a little bit wiser, not to mention a little bit older. I have decided to take the Reiki principles and put them into motion. Instead of choosing one or two big resolutions, I am going to live day by day, moment by moment. In this way, I feel I can successfully accomplish my non-resolutions!
What are the Reiki principles? Well, there are five and they are life changing! I know that sounds daunting, but, really, they are so simple. Here is a little bit of background...
Reiki is an ancient Japanese technique used for relaxation and healing. We don't really know how far back this system was originally created, but some say that it dates back at least 2,500 years and we know that Buddha used something similar, so it is very likely even older than that. The system we now know as Reiki was created by Dr. Mikao Usui (1879-1926), a Buddist priest in Japan, and further developed by one of his students, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi (1879-1940). Dr. Hayashi then passed his teachings to a Hawaiian woman of Japanese descent named Mrs. Hawayo Takata and she then passed it to the 22 teachers (Reiki masters) she taught between 1972 and 1980. They, of course, passed it to many in the western world and here I am today, sharing with you! : )
Anyway...back to the Reiki Principles...Dr. Usui created these Principles and said they are the secret to inviting happiness, the miraculous medicine of all diseases.
The Principles have been recorded using many different variations with words, but generally, they go like this...
1. Just for today, I will not anger
2. Just for today, I will not worry
3. Just for today, I will show gratitude
4. Just for today, I will be kind to those I meet
5. Just for today, I will do my best work
I recently read an article that reminded me that our brains do not "hear" the word "not." The author revamped the principles to take on an even more highly effective wording...
ex: For today only, I release all anger...I release all worry...etc.
I have decided that just for today, I am going to use these principles to guide my thinking. See? I didn't say "THIS YEAR I am going to..." I said, " Just for today..." In this way, I feel I will be successful with my non-resolutions. I know that I am working toward many goals...they are my long-term goals, but I am re-creating them into little chunks, therefore making them much more do-able for ME! I am feeling VERY successful at this point! When I start to worry about something silly, or something honestly worrisome, I just tell myself, "Just for today, I release all worry!" Guess what? It works!
So, for those of you who, like me, want to lose ten pounds and you are going to work out EVERY day, try chunking it into little pieces! Tell yourself, "Just for today, I am going to have fun on the treadmill for 20 minutes and complete a yoga routine." I completed my work out and now I am finished and feel GREAT about my accomplishment. Of course, I mark my calendar with a cute little heart and record the work out I finished, and I FEEL GREAT!
I think you may be surprised when you allow yourself the freedom of taking things one day at a time, and of course striving toward completion of those long term goals. I'll write more about this soon!
Have a beautiful day!
